I apologize for any cross mailing duplication, but I thought this is of
importance to a wide audience. This expands an earlier email I forwarded
last week.

>>>>First, let me thank you for taking the time to respond to the request
placed by Chuck Ellenbaum, for me, on Listserv mailing lists for
people interested in participating in a national anthropology network!
There was a good, enthusiastic response from people all over the
anthropological "map." Hopefully, this message will go out as a general
letter to people I have placed on a recipient list. If I did it, right,
that is!
After spending a number of frustrating years searching for suitable
anthropology material to use in my 8th grade anthropology (physical and
cultural) classes, I came to the conclusion that, truly, "God helps
those who help themselves!" Never was this old saw more appropriate
than when it comes to our discipline, anthropology, which I refer to as
the "stepsister" of the social sciences. "Stepsister," because even the
NCSS (the National Council for the Social Studies) seldom publishes
anything of anthropological note in its magazines or professional
journals, nor does it have a SIG (Special Interest Group) in
anthropology. So I decided that enough is enough: If anyone is going to
do anything about the lack of anthropology teaching materials for
precollege students, it will have to be the anthropologists! Certainly
the major publishing houses are not interested in helping because they
claim, and rightfully so at the moment, that there is no market.
What I plan to do to remedy this situation is create a national network
linking k-12 teachers with college and university instructors in a
partnership that will produce relevant anthropology teaching materials
for the entire k-12 curriculum. In linking college anthro people with
primary and secondary teachers I hope to overcome the possible
hesitancy social studies teachers may have about introducing
anthropology into their classes. Physical anthropology, which calls for
a working knowledge of so many other disciplines in addition to
anthropology presents a big problem, in itself (Where does it go in a
departmentalized high school--Science Department or Social Studies?). I
feel that if precollege teachers are given teacher-friendly materials,
backed up by someone (this is where the college/university community
comes in) who will help introduce the materials into their classes and
be there for them as a resource person, they may be more willing try
the material, be it a unit or module. The material, by the way, would
be published in a
special format, such as the units produced by the National Center for
History in the Schools at UCLA. I can have my "webmaster"--a 10th grade
student-- scan a unit onto my web page which, for those of you who
don't have it, is
<<http://www.buckley.pvt.k12.ca.us/AnthroLink/>
(If you have a favorite lesson or exercise which you would like to
share, please send it to me and I will see that it gets placed in the
"teaching materials" section).
As I see it, the "network" would consist of a series of "regional
centers," around the country, which would be linked together through
websites on the Internet. We already have at least two possible links:
SACC's and my own. I'm sure there are several more possible sites among
the respondents to my proposal, as well. A request for funds to
establish additional sites will be placed in our grant proposals.
This letter is already too long! What I need from every one is the
following information
(Please keep to the general outline; it will make it easier for me to
get at what I need):
1. Name and email address
2. Educational affiliation
3. Field or subfield of anthropology
4. What you would like to achieve through such a project
5. (IMPORTANT): Short term objectives for the project, relevant to your
field or subfield,
that someone (a funding source) would consider meritorious enough for
which to provide funding!
6. Same question; this time substitute, <underline>long-term
goals</underline> for "short term objectives."
7. Anything else, you would like to add.
The reason I am asking for your advice is that anthropology is so
broad: I have email from people interested in everything from
anthrobotany to Mayan archaeology, which is great because it reflects
the richness and diversity of our discipline. However, cobbling together a
grant proposal that does justice to this diversitywon't be easy unless I have
some feedback from you. Several others, including myself, will do the actual
nuts and bolts proposal (We planto hire someone who is a professional grant
writer with the CaliforniaState University System as a consultant), but your
input is vital for the success of this project!
