We don't find much creamware here in Iowa but we do find alot of whiteware
sherds which have lost their  glaze due to freeze and thaw action in the
soil.  The moisture gets into the sherd and just as freeze and thaw will
crack your sidewalk it cracks the sherd until the sherd is partially or
completely exfoliated.
 
Don't know if this is applicable where you are but it is common here.
