I have seen Hughes and Lester's book cited for descriptions of bone and
horn button manufacturing processes:

Hughes, Elizabeth and Marion Lester
1981 "The Big Book of Buttons". Boyerstown Publishing Company.
Boyerstown, Pennsylvania.

and I found this listed at http://world.std.com/~ata/drbiblo.html (The
site is titled "Books, Articles, and Dissertations on Clothing,
1840-1865" by Vicki Betts, and this particular reference was found in
the "Jewelry and Chatelaines" section)

Musser, Mary
"Massachusetts Horn Smiths: A Century of Comb-making, 1775-1875,"
Old-Time-New England 58, iii-iv, 59-68.
