Hi ALl,
We had a gal ask about iron fortified ABM affecting the iron in the
breastmilk and would it affect the baby's iron levels. The answer, I know
is Yes! I know that the iron in the ABM binds with the iron in the
breastmilk and then makes it impossible (?) for the baby to get. My
question is: is this how it really works? What are the iron types in the
breasmilk vs the ABM (or any iron-fortified foods), adn how do they bind
together to cause breastfed babies to become anemic?
Now here is a question. Is there any ABM out there that has NO iron in it,
something that BF babies could have as a supplement without affecting their
iron levels? THe answer is probably "No", but wouldn't it be interesting if
there were? Also, do the low iron ABMs cause as severe a problem as the
iron fortified ABMs?
