OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY

The MS Program in Industrial Archaeology at Michigan Technological
University announces the availability of Teaching and/or Research
Assistantships for the 1998-1999 academic year. We seek up to four
highly-motivated and talented students to participate in our
interdisciplinary program in IA. A track record of student support,
sponsored research, and a stimulating environment make this an excellent
opportunity for the right students.

Recent fieldwork projects have focused on sites such as a 19th century
bloomery furnace on Lake Superior, turn of the century copper and gold
mining sites in Alaska, a 17th and 18th century sugar plantation and port
on the Caribbean island of Nevis, and copper mining sites in the Keweenaw
Peninsula. Thesis research topics have ranged from studies of the charcoal
production that supported early iron-making, to the role of lighthouses on
Lake Superior, company housing in mining communities, to the importance of
mechanization in iron foundries, from archaeological interpretation of
household consumption in company towns to interpretive plans for an
historic mine site.

Graduates of the program have found employment in Federal, State, and
private settings, as archaeologists, historic site managers, museum
curators, and crm consultants.

The faculty group working in the program includes three full-time
archaeologists, three historians of technology, two cultural
anthropologists, and an architectural historian. Some details about
coursework, faculty, facilities, etc. can be accessed on the website at
http://www.ss.mtu.edu/IA/iahm.html. Contact Patrick Martin at the address
below for applications and printed material. To insure full consideration
for support, applications must be complete by March 1.

We will have a display in the bookroom at the January 1998 SHA meeting in
Atlanta, and will be doing personal interviews at that time. Contact
Patrick Martin for an appointment.
