Here are some history titles that may be relevant:
 
Blassingame, John W., The Slave Community: Plantation Life in the Antebellum
   South (Oxford, 1979)
Foner, Eric, Nothing But Freedom (I don't have pub. info for this one)
Isaac, Rhys, The Transformation of Virginia, 1740-1790 (London, 1982)
   this is primarily about the religious life of English settlers, but
   contains some information about African-Americans and slavery.
Thornton, John, Africa and Africans in the Making of the Atlantic World,
   1400 - 1680 (Cambridge, 1992)
