Hello Everyone,

The Department of Archaeology at the University of York is now
accepting applications from suitably qualified candidates to embark
in October 1998 on full-time study leading to the degree of DPhil (a
British equivalent of Ph.D).

As the studentship for this Ph.D. is open to North American students,
and the topic is broadly relevant to both British and North American
archaeology, list members may know of potential students who would
be interested in this information. The deadline is soon -- May 29th.
Potential candidates should contact Julian Richards at [log in to unmask]
as soon as possible to register their interest.

The student scholarship is offered for research on "The future
directions
of Sites and Monuments Records: from planning to research", under the
supervision of Dr Julian Richards and staff of the Archaeology Data
Service.
British SMRs are roughly equivalent to SHPO offices in the United
States,
and play an extremely important role in the planning control process.

The project builds on the massive indices of data accumulated from the
1970-90s mainly for the purpose of development control. It comes at a
time
when a major injection of resources is expected to enable SMRs to become
research tools which model the past and provide national access through
networking, offering an opportunity to reintegrate the discipline.

The research project will benefit from collaboration with partner
organisations including the Association of Local Government
Archaeological
Officers (ALGAO), Northamptonshire County Council, and the Royal
Commission
on the Historical Monuments of England.

The scholarship will cover the cost of resident tuition fees and provide
£2,600 towards living expenses. Candidates must demonstrate before
admission
that they have sufficient additional funds to cover the costs of their
living expenses (estimated at c. £6000). The scholarship is awarded for
up
to three years of full-time study, subject to satisfactory performance.
Award-holders will be expected to undertake 36 hours of teaching each
year,
together with associated marking.

Applications for a research award must be made on the appropriate form
(available from the Department of Archaeology or the Graduate Schools
Office).
If an applicant has not already applied for a place for graduate study,
then
the research award application must also be accompanied
by a completed graduate study application form. Forms must be returned
to
the Graduate Schools Office, University of York, no later than 29th May,
1998.
Potential candidates should contact Julian Richards at [log in to unmask]
as soon as possible to register their interest. The Department will
notify
the successful candidates no later than 31st August, 1998, but would
hope
to indicate whether applicants have been placed on a short-list by July
1998.

Cheers for now,

Alicia Wise
