I cannot agree more with Hannah. In the Netherlands we
(breatfeedingcounselors) only start antibiotics after 24 hours, when fever
did not drop. In my experience it always does. We usualy use paracetamol as
a releave for symptoms, when neccecary. In 15 years of counseling I have
only seen three abcesses. All three were the result of courses not related
to the abcense of antibiotics, or the result of that use. Regular health
care used to advise cold compresses and intibiotics, with the result of
recurrent breastinfections. Times are changing, warm compresses are advised
more and more nowadays, and antibiotics are only given in some cases for
instance when a mother has damaged nipples and we suspect entry of bacteria.
