The state of Indiana does not allow the excavation for artifacts on
private property without a permit. To do so without such a permit is
a Class A misdemeanor. The permit requires that the work be dine
under the supervision of an archaeologist. The law (IC14-3.3-4) that
was passed in 1989, has been upheld by the upper state courts in the
appeal process.
