Dear Joanne,
    Thank you very much for your reply.  A biologist colleague dipped the
    beads in a solution of sodium sulfide.  He said that although much black
    substance came off (possibly an iron oxide polish?) that there was no
    indication of lead.  Not sure how subtle his test was.
