*** Survey begins at N.C. Blackbeard wreck site

Researchers Thursday began surveying a wreck site where they believe
the flagship of the infamous English pirate Blackbeard ran aground
and sank 279 years ago. A team of underwater archaeologists and
divers planned to map the shallow-water site within two miles of the
beach at Beaufort Inlet before attempting to retrieve artifacts that
could prove the wreck to be that of Blackbeard's vessel Queen Anne's
Revenge. Divers will document the layout of the site where last
November researchers found cannons and a brass ship's bell dated
1709. Story at
