This is increasingly being shown to be the case with Staffordshire ceramics,
for instance, some wares were produced purely for export to North America. N.
Ewins, "Supplying the Present Wants of our Yankee Cousins...": Staffordshire
ceramics and the American market 1775-1880, J. of Ceramic History 15
(1997)-whole issue- is a useful recent contribution on the subject. This can
be purchased from the City Museum, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England. Less is
known about specialised production for other markets , for example, Europe,
though the Dutch were talking about having a conference on industrialised
English ceramic imports next year in Nijmegen. If it happens I will post
details on histarch.
