I wonder when the first warning signs were put up on tumuli on Salisbury
Plain to indicate to tank drivers that they should go around rather than
over. They may date from before the first world war - and American
tank drivers may have met up with them in the second.
(Patrick O'Bannon wrote that he is working on a history of
reservation policy within the Army between 1933 and 1966).
