Canvas or burlap are popular inner covers, along with plastic sheets.
They have the advantage that they do not permit building of ladder comb on
th top bars, and do provide a good seal --- along with a way to 'peek' at
the bees by pulling back one corner.
We've uesed all these methods and prefer them to rigid inner covers, since
they require no scraping and are easy to tote around.
Also search under 'hive mats'.
