An elderly gentleman recently told me about moving his family's farm house
in the early years if this century. The country here (Illinois) is flat and
the move was accomplished in the winter when the ground was frozen. They
jacked up the house and put skids underneath. Then an ox team was hitched
to the house/skid combination and they pulled it as far as possible during
the day. When night fell they unhitched the oxen and went inside the house
for dinner and the night. The next morning they hitched up and moved on. I
believe they moved from one side of a section to the other so the process
took a few days.
