Actually, these are not bumble bees but are carpenter bees, the subject
of this thread.  This is the typical activity of carpenter bees, but
because they are very large they are often confused with bumble bees.
Bumble bees nest on or close to the ground, in nests of fibrous
material, never in holes in wood.
