Yes, Holmes did. He withdrew to a little villa " situated upon the
southern slope of the Downs, commanding a great view of the Channel" in
Sussex. Here he kept bees and wrote a book entitled "Practical Handbook
of Bee Culture, with some Observations upon the Segregation of the Queen"
To quote Holmes, "the fruit of pensive nights and laborious days, when I
watched the little working gangs as once I watched the criminal world of
London". It does seem logical that a man with such deductive reasoning
powers would find bees as facinating as a good mystery, for bees are quite
mysterious, which I discover more so each day.
