For a listing of the many railroad historical societies check out Model
Railroading magazine available at hobby shops specializing in model trains.
Check in your Yellow Pages.

+AD4-Dear Folks,
+AD4-
+AD4-I have found that the railway companies themselves are the best sources
+AD4-for construction blueprints and yard layouts. Many of the large, well
+AD4-entrenched railroads have company archives. As well, many of the fallen
+AD4-flags (defunct railroads) have placed their archives in public hands.
+AD4-For instance, the archives of the SOO LINE are at the Minnesota
+AD4-Historical Society, the archives of the Milwaukee Road are at the
+AD4-Milwaukee Public Library, the Chicago and Northwestern archives are at
+AD4-the University of Illinois at DeKalb (I believe). As well, currently
+AD4-operating railroads, through their marketing departments, usually
+AD4-maintain an archive. I have had good success with Candian Pacific
+AD4-Railway through their marketing folks in Montreal.
+AD4-
+AD4-Many of the archives contain papers, blueprints, land acquistion papers,
+AD4-railway charters and, often lots of photos. This would include
+AD4-predessessor railroads and railroads merged into the larger company.
+AD4-Plus, there are scads of railroad historical +ACY- technical societies run
+AD4-by very dedicated amatuers who are always willing to help with info,
+AD4-photos and oral histories. Often, many are ex-railway employees.
+AD4-
+AD4-All are good sources of information and guidance.
+AD4-
+AD4-Good Hunting.
