Dear Sarah
Our experience with digital cameras is similar to Alan
Vince's. Objects are easily and rapidly recorded with
digital cameras, but for fieldwork the resolution is
insufficient.
Therefore we are using traditional photography in fieldwork
with photographs subsequently scanned (resulting in a
digital record). The scanned image can then be draped over
a DTM which has been obtained using differential GPS. Plans
and drawings can then be made using various software
packages.
The main reason for this approach is that we work
extensively in the intertidal zone and speed of operation
is essential. The main disadvantage is that photos can not
be viewed as and when they are taken (as is possible with
digital photography).

Having used digital cameras I agree that at present the
resolution is pretty poor compared to traditional photography.
Hopefully the technology in this area will improve.
However as an alternate to digital cameras and with a better
resolution it is possible with the right software for a computer to
digitally 'grab' images from video cameras recordings.
Most suppliers of software can give you details of the current
availability.

Further to my message regarding the use of video cameras as an alternative =
to digital cameras.
Today I recieved a copy of the mail order catalogue =27Innovations=27 and =
on the back cover they are advertising a bit of hardware that will connect =
a video camera and PC to effectively download high quality digital =
pictures.
The product is called =27Snap Magic Image Grabber=27 the advertised price =
is =A3150, however if you shop around I would expect to get it for much =
less. From my experience the =27Innovations=27 catalogue is convenient but =
also expensive=21
However if one wishes to continue down the digital camera road a company =
worth looking at to supply such equipment is:
FIRSTCALL
Cherry Grove Cottage
Gotton
Cheddon Fitzpaine
Taunton

TA2 8LL
Tel: 01823 413007
Fax:01823 413103
web page: www.firstcall-photographic.co.uk
This company is worth contacting for a catalogue for any photographic =
recording, whether traditional of electronic.
Hope you find this of interest and use.
