Hello again. thanks to all who responded about cesspools. I see I should have
been bit more clear in my questions. I'm aware of OSHA regulations on confined
or enclosed spaces (though much appreciate their email address and will pursue
all pertinent regs.) The city of La Verne is obliging us to "abandon" this
cesspool, which will mean opening two very large holes in the roof of the
structure and pouring in sterile sand. Before this happens, I was/am
contemplating the worth of removing some? all? of the contents for
archaeological examination. The city assures me that wonderful things turn up
in their sewer all the time, jewelry, bottles, fetuses, etc. However, other
colleagues polled so far tell me cesspool deposits "aren't worth messing with"
and that they rarely contain anything noteworthy. It was on this point that I
especially was seeking input from you-all, though I do appreciate your
cautionary points. The deposit is 8 feet from the roof---depth unknown. The
county health officials want protective clothing worn, etc. We'll be careful.
And I don't think I'll be asking any students to participate.
