 JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
 
ARCHEOLOGIST/ASSISTANT DIVISION DIRECTOR
 
The Cultural Resources Division of the Kansas State Historical Society is
seeking to employ an archeologist who would also serve as the
Assistant Division Director.  This position assists in the management of
the state historic preservation office and the archeology programs of the
Society.  This existing full-time state general fund position is based at the
Kansas History Center in Topeka.
 
DUTIES OF POSITION
 
The major duties of the position include the following: (1) assist Division
Director in planning, coordinating, and evaluating the operations of the
Division programs; (2) supervise personnel involved in implementation of
Division programs; (3) serve as State Archeologist; (4) design and carry
out archeological research projects that add to our knowledge of Kansas
prehistory and history; (5) participate in public outreach activities.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
The minimum qualifications for the position are: (1) graduate degree in
anthropology with specialization in archeology; (2) two years' experience
in archeology; (3) two years' supervisory experience; and (4) a valid
driver's license.
 
Desired qualifications include the following: (1) five years' experience in
Plains archeology with demonstrated competence in field work, analysis,
and report writing; (2) experience with federal cultural resource
legislation and regulations;  (3) proven ability to develop and make
informational presentations to all types of audiences; (4) ability to work
with the public and develop good relationships with landowners and
managers, avocational archeologists, agency personnel, etc.; (5) a solid
record of completing projects; (6) ability to plan and work as part of a
team.
 
SALARY
 
The beginning annual salary is $30,810 with increases to $43,368 with
good state benefits.
