Has anyone encountered dates (TPQ) for button back marks "best treble plated"
or "treble plated" on flat disc buttons (probable South type 9 or 18). The
buttons were recovered from ca. 1809 - 1830 context house site.
Button 1 has "best treble plated" in circular stamp, all caps, with an eagle
silhouette (wings spread pointing up and head turned left) at the top center
of the circle. Face is corroded but was probably plain gilt finish - no
evidence of engraving or design. Diam. is 22.5 mm. missing eye.
Button 2 has "treble plated" in circular stamp, all caps, with what appears
to be a crown or headpiece with four plumes at the top center of the circle.
Face is badlt y corroded but was probably plain gilt finish - no evidence
of engraving or design. Diam. is 21 mm. missing eye.
I have consulted A. H. Albert's "record of American Uniform and Historical
Buttons" and McGuin and Bazelon's American Military Buttonmakers". The
buttons in question are from a civilian site and not likely of military
origin.
Any information on these specimens would be greatly appreciated...
Thank You,
Charles Heath
