Mail*Link(r) SMTP RE>Large Buried Wooden Barrel at
Mid-Nineteenth...
An excavation of mid to late nineteenth century houses in Melbourne undertaken
by Justin Macarthy in 1988 included at least one cess pit that was constructed
with a wooden barrel as the lining (Commonwealth Centre Site). My memory is
that the fill of the pit outside the barrel was visable and this made it clear
that the barrel was used deliberately to construct the cess pit. It seems a
good use for an old barrel and a great way to revet your cess pit - you would
not want it to collapse!
