I conducted a small data recovery study of part of an 1850-1880
company town called "Lockville" next to a Lock and Dam complex on the
Deep River in the Piedmont of North Carolina. The town no longer exists
except as an archaeological site. The lock and dam, and the town, were
established as part of a river transport facility used to haul iron ore and
some coal. The town contained an iron forge, blacksmith shops, grist
mills, stores, and a railroad line. While only a small part of the town was
archaeologically examined, a general history and site plan is available.
