PRESS RELEASE

Varroa Mites identified on Vancouver Island

BCMAFF officials confirmed April 1, 1997 that varroa mites had been
identified in honey bee colonies on Vancouver Island. This find ends the
Island's preferred status as a source of varroa-free bees for Alberta
beekeepers.

Alberta beekeepers that have ordered honey bees from Vancouver Island or
the Gulf Islands are advised to assess their orders in the light of this
new information.

For further information contract Kenn Tuckey, Provincial Apiculturist,
(403) 422-1789.
