If the hives are to be moved in a straight line without altering greatly the
bees orientation marks (trees, bushes, buildings) the hives could just be
moved a foot a day. You do not need to wait till winter for such small
movements but do not move more than three foot at a time. If there are
orientation features used by the bees an alternative is to move the hives 2
miles away until the bees re-orient and then back to the desired location.
Hives must be moved at night when bees have ceased flying. 2 weeks to a
month is long enough for bees to re-orient and they will not be confused
when moved back to the home apiary.
