NORTH CAROLINA ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH
October is Archaeology Month in North Carolina! The NC Archaeological
Council, the NC Archaeological Society and the Office of State
Archaeology have teamed together to celebrate archaeology and its role
in preserving and investigating important aspects of North Carolina*s
past.
The theme for this year*s celebration is *North Carolina Archaeology:
Lessons in Heritage Education. *
Archaeology Month will consist of four parts:
(1) Governor Hunt will issue a proclamation officially recognizing
Archaeology Month;
(2) An ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH POSTER will be available October 1. The
poster features photographs and accompanying text from 16 important
archaeological sites (both prehistoric and historic), institutions, and
projects from across North Carolina that have emphasized education and
public involvement. The poster will be offered free for educational
purposes within the state. Others may order the poster for $3 ($1 each
plus $2 S&H per order) from the North Carolina Office of State
Archaeology.
Individual components of the poster, including 16 very nice photos, are
posted on the World Wide Web--North Carolina Homepage at
http://www.arch.dcr.state.nc.us.
(3) An Adopt-An-Archaeology Book Program is designed to put quality
books on archaeology into school libraries. This program will allow the
public to purchase recommended books through the Archaeology Month
sponsors and have the books donated to schools of their choice; and,
(4) A Calendar of Events for October and beyond will be compiled. This
is available on the Homepage (http://www.arch.dcr.state.nc.us).
