From a more recent perspective, Henry Glassie briefly discussed dugout =
canoes in the Eastern U.S. in his "Pattern in the Material Folk Culture" =
book (1968). Glassie's brief narrative appears on pp. 181-182 and he =
includes several footnoted references.
 
Also, I don't have the sources handy, but some writings on the =
Salzburgers who settled at Ebenezer, Georgia in 1736 discuss dugout =
canoes and periaguas in use by early settlers and surrounding Native =
Americans.
