Someone recently posted this... While I realize that 'nurse' may not mean
breastfeed, I am certain that the
lifeboats' larders of drinking water and hardtack crackers did not include
cases of Enfamil" in discussing issues relating to the caregiving of a
particular baby on the Titanic.
While I was traveling in Australia three years ago, I was taken by the
statements on airplanes that began with "if you are nursing a child, be
sure to put YOUR oxygen mask on first and then assist the child." Until I
looked up to see that the visuals accompanying these instructions included
a MALE holding a3 yr old, I "just naturally" assumed that they were
referring to breastfeeding and I was so impressed at how enlightened the
Ossies were re: this in a public place like an airplane.
(I can see all Down Under LCs laughing uproariously now)
What they were referring to, of course, was caregiving of a baby or child
(no real distinction made), not breastfeeding! (although that could
certainly be considered part of caregiving, though it was not mentioned
explicitly)
I wonder if the "nursing" mentioned in the Titanic post was similar in its
inference.... :-)
Def. of LC service: "We are all faced with a series of great opportunities
brilliantly disguised as impossible situations."
