Possibly the confusion is related to there being different types of "moth
balls".
What I find most commonly sold as moth balls is naphthalene. This is a
moderately good insect repellent, horse---- as an insecticide, and would not
control established insects.
Paradichlorobenzene/PDB is most commonly sold around here as crystals,
although "balls" are also sometimes available. It is a fairly effective
fumigant insecticide used for control of many insects. I think it also has
some repellent activity.
