I have a mom who's been BFing 4 months, who had 2 root canals (!) within the
last 2 months. Has swelling and pain, and is going for a consult to determine
if she'll require an apicoectomy. Dentist prescribed Erythromycin and
diflunisol (Dolobid) 500 mgm. q 10-12 hrs. for pain and for anti-inflammatory
effect. PDR states diflunisol is: "excreted in human milk in concentrations
of 2-7% of those in plasma. Because of the potential for serious adverse
reactions in nursing infants from dolobid, a decision should be made whether
to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the
importance of the drug to the mother." Also states its: "comparable in
analgesic efficacy to aspirin 650 mg, acetaminophen 600 or 650 mg." I don't
have access to my other books today. So for now she's taking ibuprofen and
says if she needs an apicoectomy she'll have it done with local anesthesia.
Mom has 2 questions. She wants to know if ibuprofen will work as well as
diflunisol. Mom wants to know implications of general anes. on BF "just in
case" she decides on the oral surgery. She's been on soft foods for a long
time now, and is having a rough time but BFing continues to be a really
positive experience for her and her baby. TIA for any info or experience you
can share.
