Hi Ian,
 
Mcaffee programs are free to individual users. There are several others
that are just as good or better, also free. I use Mcaffee on all the
files that come in to my bbs, 29,000+ on line right now. Mcaffee is
upgraded every month.
 
No scanner will tell you if the file has been tampered with and had a
destructive trojan horse added. From what I have read the problem with
the files above is that they contain a trojan horse and nothing will
detect that but a keen eyed sysop or down loader. I try to run every
file that is uploaded to my bbs. Yes, I have found several in the
last five years that were trojans that would erase you fat table or
dos directory. I have learned from bad experience which files to test
for trojan's. Knock wood so far I have never passed on a file to my
own users that contained a virus or trojan horse.
