Just a brief note on the fly in response to Anita's SOPA question(s):
A significant fraction of SOPA's membership can be classified as academics;
over 130 have certification in "teaching". BTW, an equivalent number are
certified in "historical archaeology". The major category of folks who
don't join are federal employees, not academics (caveat: many feds ARE
members, and those numbers are increasing, I think).
Dues are graduated, based on income, roughly $15-100/year.
Having done CRM work is not a prerequisite for membership. Having
conducted, supervised, and reported on an archaeological inquiry in a
professional manner, determined by peers, is what is required.
