Julia,
Another good source on gravemarkers is a book edited by Richard E. Meyer
(1992) called Cemeteries and Gravemarkers: Voices of American CUlture.
Published in Logan by Utah State University Press.
Philippe Aries has also written a nice, short little book that might help
with social and historical context: Western Attitudes Toward Death from
the
Middle Ages to the Present. (1974; Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University
Press). Translated by Patricia Ranum.
