This is a question to the list from an off list person working on a turn of
the century Potawatomie Indian alottment farmstead in Oklahoma. They have an
iron churn with two bale-type handles that served, with a mechanism on the
stone ware lid, to both seal the container and keep it in the iron bucket
while the bucket and stoneware container were turned end-to-end on a frame
by means of a crank handle. A more common, wooden sided, version of this
agitatorless churn appears in turn of the century catalogs. Does anyone
have info (references) on these stoneware/metal churns re. period of use,
places of manufacture, etc.?
Any help or leads will be appreciated...
