Mystic Seaport is pleased to announce an upcoming conference called "Race,
Ethnicity, and Power in Maritime America" to be held at Mystic Seaport in
Mystic, Connecticut, Septmeber 14-17, 1995. This message gives a brief

The conference is sponsored by the Connecticut Afro-American Historical
Society, the New England Association of American Studies, and Mystic Seaport,
the Museum of America and the sea.
 
"Race, Ethnicity, and Power in Maritime America" is designed to expand the
boundaries of the American maritime story and foster communication between
scholars, museums, and the public regarding race and ethnicity. Scheduled
topics include: sailors and rivermen in slavery and freedom; racial and
national identity in the maritime world; labor struggles in the 19th and 20th
centuries; American Indians; Cape Verdean's; the U.S. Navy; Amistad; and the
character of maritime communities. The concluding roundtable on Sept.17 will
be "New Directions in Maritime Studies".
 
Registration is $75, $65 for museum members, and $15 for students. Inexpensive
student housing is available.
 
The conference is funded in part by the Connecticut Humanities Council and
Conde Nast.
