YES. There are field opportunities available to junior high school age
children.

Many of the Passport in Time programs are open to families. All of the
projects list a minimum age and well as special skills. The up coming issue
of the PIT Traveler will be available back from the printer on March 3, 1997.
This issue advertises 109 projects in the US. There are projects in IL, MI,
MN, and WI in this issue. Three of the six projects allow individuals under
18 years old.

Passport in Time is a heritage program run by the US Forest Service. It is
an opportunity for the public to participate in archaeology and historic
preservation projects throughout the forest system. The program is run by
professional archaeologists. Participants receive training and a
preservation message. The projects range from archival research and survey
to excavation and restoration. In addition to the advertised projects,
sometimes, the archaeologists will work with a classroom teacher to develop a
program specificly geared to a group of children. We currently have a 7th
grade class assisting with analysis of historic artifacts from South Dakota.
