After 3 years of sporatic looking, we possibly, may, seem to
have (fingers are still crossed) discovered the location of
a 175+ year old well that serviced the original residents of
site 18FR696. We have reason to know that early residents
discarded trash into the well. The well is now completely
buried and filled with dirt and gravel. The question to be
addressed is, how does one go about safely recovering the
artifacts from the bottom of the well that could be up to 20
feet deep when fully redug. Any references or advice on the
archeological recovery of material from the bottom of an
early 19th century, stone-lined, hand-dug well?
