I am involved in wintering observation hives on Long Island, NY, USA.
At two sites, I put a double wide (two frames) observation hive in
place of the summer hive (one frame thick). These are three frames
high. The queen is not as visable but the overwintering is much better.
Two other hives are overwintered in the single wide observation hive.
One is three deep and one shallow high and the other is one deep and
a shallow. These require heavy feeding with some pollen substitute
added to the syrup. Both are covered with insulation panels (styrafoam)
at night to help them maintain temperature.
