Hello Lacnetters:
I was wondering if any of you might have an idea as to what is going on with
a mom I spoke with recently. She has a 6 and 1/2 week old baby girl she is
exclusively breastfeeding. She went through a bout of mastitis 4 weeks ago.
She is now experiencing what she describes as "a burning sensation, behind
the areola area". Initially it was continuous for about 24 hours and now
occurs intermittently for 15 minutes to an hour each time several times
throughout the day. She feels some pain when the baby initally latches on
to the affected side but it isn't the same "burning" feeling she gets at
other times. The only information I have points to ductal yeast infections.
The baby has no signs of thrush and her nipples aren't sore. Would the baby
or mom have to have other outward signs of yeast before a ductal infection
could set in? If it is a ductal infection would the "burning" be
intermittent or continuous. Please e-mail me with any ideas or suggestions
you might have. Thanks!
