Another excellent source on US Military sites is Francis Paul Prucha, A
Guide to the Military Posts of the United States, 1789-1895, State
Historical Society of Wisconsin, Madison, 1964.  It not only does a
thorough job of characterizing and summarizing, but includes a super
bibliographic essay and list of sources.
