Apologies for cross-posting...
The University of Wisconsin-Stout and the University of Minnesota's
Project SMELT are pleased to announce their cooperative field school on
the Low Birker Farm, in the Upper Esk Valley, Cumbria, England. The Low
Birker site is located within the bounds of the Lake District National
Park. The field school will run from 8 July to 11 August, 1998.
Project supervision will be provided by Dr. Carl Blair, Director of
Project SMELT at U of M. Field supervision will be provided by Dr. Blair
and a team of archaeologists from the University of Minnesota. In
addition to the core team of archaeologists, field school students will be
joined by Earthwatch volunteers and scholars from the UK. The 1998 field
season will concentrate on a medieval iron smelting facility on the Low
Birker farm. One of the research goals this season will be to more
precisely date the site itself, as well as explore aspects of medieval
iron production. The Esk Valley itself is "archaeologically untouched",
with remains dating from Neolithic times to the present. Students will
participate in area excavation, survey, pollen coring, and field lab and
conservation work.
The course is designed for interested, but not necessarily experienced,
undergrads. Upon successful completion, students will earn four (4)
semester credits in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
Instructional topics will range from archaeological method and theory,
experimental archaeology and public archaeology. In addition, students
will have the opportunity to visit other sites of cultural or
archaeological interest in the region.
The program fee for the five week course will be roughly $2,650. This
covers tuition at UW, room and board in a dorm setting at the Woolpack
Inn near the site, and field supplies. Airfare, passport fees, and other
personal expenses are not included. The final cost will vary based on
changing exchange rates and housing costs. Lastly, students are
responsible for arranging travel to the UK, and for ground transport to
Ravenglass train station nearby the site. The closest major airport is
Manchester.
Completed applications are due at UW-Stout no later than 1 April 1998.
Application forms are available at the following address: Office of
International Programs, 400 Bowman Hall, University of Wisconsin-Stout,
