A good reference for this type of project is:

        1979    Roman Brick and Tile, Oxford.
 
The full potential of the type of analysis Iain mentioned has never been
fulfilled.  Classifications schemes would have to use morphological
characteristics, petrographic descriptions, heavy mineral or
isotope analysis, and detailed historical research.
