Albert C. Manucy, former historian at Castillo de San Marcos NM
(St. Augustine, FL) and curator in the Southeast Regional Office,
died in St. Augustine on March 2. He was 87. Manucy first entered
on duty with the NPS in 1938, retiring in 1971. He served
twenty-eight of those years at the Castillo and four at SERO. Mr.
Manucy received a Departmental Meritorious Service award in 1953,
and, in August 1996, received a special letter of commendation
from Director Roger Kennedy for his significant contributions to
the Service. "Albert Manucy, in his very quiet and overly modest
way, blazed the trail for Florida historians during the 1940s and
1950s as the only genuine authority working in the area of St.
Augustine's Spanish Colonial History," said Dr. Michael Gannon,
director of the Institute for Early Contact Period Studies at the
University of Florida. The funeral is scheduled for 10:00AM,
Wednesday, March 4, at Ancient City Baptist Church in St.
Augustine. Donations in Albert Manucy's memory may be made to the
St. Augustine Historical Society, 271 Charlotte Street, St.
Augustine, FL 32084.
