In response to the question on What is "Lost Towns":
The Lost Towns Project is a newly created (June 1996) team investigating two
17th/early 18th century towns in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. We were
"brought together" by Dr. Al Luckenbach, the Anne Arundel County
Archaeologist. The two towns we are investigating are Providence (1649) and
London Town (1684). Both towns fell to the wayside by the early 1700's in
the case of Providence, and 1760 for London Town. No maps or plats for the
two towns survive, though they are remarkable intact archaeologically. In
addition to tradition excavation, we are using GIS (Map/Info and Arc/Info) to
help reconstruct the plans through integrating archival research and
archaeological data. We have been using GPS (with differential) to map many
of the sites, in order to get a highly accurate map to inform the conjectural
plan of London as developed by the project historian.
