Glenn:
You might want to try contacting Dr. John Knoerl, who has been working
on American(!) Civil War battlefields in my home state of Virginia as part
of a battlefield protection programme. Dr. Knoerl is the chief of the GIS
Branch of the Archaeological Assistance Program (National Park
Service) here in the States.
Since I recall that you have a special interest in GIS applications, this lead
may be of particular relevance. The last time I spoke with John, he had
been undertaking some fairly sophisticated analyses with folks like Dr.
Fred Limp and his associates at CAST (Center for Advanced Spatial
Technologies in Arkansas) on a modified form of a "viewshed", designed
to calculate the coverage area for different types of projectile types -
though I believe it was for cannon, rather than muskets.
I don't have an e-mail contact for him, but his s-mail address is:
Interagency Resources Division (413), National Park Service, Dept. of
Interior, PO Box 37127, Washington, DC 20013-7127; tel. 01 01 (202)
343-9500; fax 01 01 (202) 343-1836.
Hope this helps, and all the best with your work.
Clay
