Desert Archaeology excavated a Chinese farmer's household in Tucson last fall.
We found a small pit containing reconstructible and whole Chinese vessels,
animal bones, and a large amount of organic material. The presence of organic
materials and artifacts suggests that this might be an outhouse ot an area where
waste was stored. I'm wondering whether Chinese farmer latrines might be
smaller than "average" because the Chinese would have used the waste as
fertilizer.
The pit is 23 inches wide, 15 inches long, and 24 inches deep. It dates to about
1890-1900.
