Call for papers for proposed symposium on INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPES at the
Society For Historical Archaeology Meeting, Corpus Christi, Texas, Jan.
8-12, 1997.

Archaeologists have always been interested in the spatial distribution of
features and activities across the landscape, and this approach has great
potential for interpreting industrial sites. This session will examine how
industrial development shapes and is shaped by the landscape, and how this
provides insight into specific cultural and historical contexts.

Potential paper topics (by no means complete!):
* Relationship of technological organization/change to landscape
patterning.
* Interpreting the social organization of production from industrial
features.
* Company housing, spatial organization, and social control in company
towns.
* Industrial expansion into rural areas.
* Source materials for studying industrial landscapes.
* Environmental and landscape changes caused by industrial development.
* Issues of scale in studying industrial landscapes.
* Identification, evaluation and preservation of industrial landscapes.
* How landscapes reflect and/or create social categories and actions.

If you are interested, we need to hear from you ASAP, as a complete
symposium submission packet is due by May 1, 1996!
