This past summer (as part of a college course in
archeology) we found a stone lined well dating to the
early 1800s. It was buried below the current surface of
earth about 2 feet. In the process we found located several
dozen artifacts. So far we have gone into the well only
about 1 foot. This coming summer several students will
continue excavating the well. This is at site 18FR696 near
Jefferson, MD. Nearly every old house in Jefferson either
has a well or had a well that was filled in for safety.
