Multiple and ancient origins of the domestic dog
An exhaustive analysis of the genetic sequences from 67 breeds
of dog has revealed that the domestic dog is more ancient than
scientists believed. In a report, a team of biologists concludes
that dogs probably originated 100,000 or more years ago,
evolving from wolves much earlier than the 14,000 years
suggested by archaeological evidence. "The origin of dogs dates
well before the development of agricultural population centers
that occurred approximately 10,000 to 14,000 years ago, and goes
back to hunter-gatherer societies," said Robert K. Wayne, an
associate professor of biology at the University of California
at Los Angeles, who headed the study. "While many people think a
high level of sophistication was required to domesticate wild
animals, our data imply that very primitive societies may have
had domestic animals." For the study, the researchers analyzed
genetic material from 140 dogs and from 162 wolves, jackals, and
coyotes. The results failed to support the belief of some
scientists that dogs evolved from jackals or coyotes. The data
also showed that dogs are genetically more different from one
another and from wolves than the researchers had believed. (The
